5 Day Trips from Charleston

There’s something about the low country of South Carolina; it’s oak trees and scenery, to its long and rich history, it seems to forever be a wonderful place to visit. Charleston has plenty to offer, don’t get me wrong. But sometimes there’s something about a day trip to help awaken the soul. Here are my 5 favorite cities close to Charleston to visit.

Beaufort

Admire the scenery while strolling through downtown, you might recognize some areas that were scenes from movies (Forest Gump, and a few more). Done with the downtown scene? Check out Hunting Island, Lady’s Island, or even Parris Island (home to Marine Corps Recruit Depot).

TIP: Visit Scout Southern Market which is home to the Original Sweet Tea Float.

Food + Beverage

  • Fishcamp on 11th Street ($$): located on Parris Island
  • Hemingway’s Bistro ($-$$):
  • Lady’s Island Dockside ($$): located just off of Beaufort on Lady’s Island
  • Saltus River Grill

Bluffton

I feel like this cute town is often overlooked due it being nestled just outside of Hilton Head Island. Old Town Bluffton is nestled along the May River; Downtown being a few blocks away and offers quaint shops and restaurants to be able to peruse for an afternoon. Grab coffee/breakfast at the Corner Perk, or even end your day at Burnt Church Distillery.

Georgetown

Located about 1.5 hours north of Charleston, spend the day exploring Georgetown’s boardwalk, museums, and colorful shops. There are several cafes and bakeries to grab coffee while you’re perusing through Tomlinson’s or admiring the local artists at the Georgetown Art Gallery.

Moncks Corner

Moncks Corner is home to Cypress Gardens, which highlights South Carolina’s beautiful nature. If you’ve ever seen The Notebook or The Patriot, then you’ll recognize parts of the Gardens. There’s plenty of hiking in the area, a butterfly garden, and canoes to paddle around the swamp.

Summerville

Explore Summerville’s Farmer Market on Saturday mornings (best I’ve seen in the area) and quaint shops of restaurants around its charming downtown, including Cotton Down South and French Mercantile. Drop by the Summerville-Dorchester Museum or explore the Sawmill Branch Multi-Use Trail.

Food + Beverage

  • The Azalea Bar
  • Frothy Beard Off World ($-$$)
  • The Gathering Cafe ($)
  • IceHouse ($-$$)
  • Laura ($$)
  • Sweetwater 123 ($$)
