Scenic Hikes near Helen, GA

The area surrounding Helen, Georgia, is known for its beautiful landscapes and is surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains, providing ample opportunities for hiking. Be sure to check the weather forecast, wear proper footwear and bring proper essentials while hiking. Here are some of my favorite hikes in the Helen area.

Hikes + Waterfalls

Anna Ruby Falls

A short and paved trail leading to the stunning Anna Ruby Falls, where two creeks converge. The trail is about 0.9 miles round trip and offers scenic views of the falls.

Dukes Creek Falls

Located in the Chattahoochee National Forest, this wide trail leads to the picturesque Dukes Creek Falls. The trail is approximately 2 miles round trip and is known for its wildflowers. By far this was my favorite hike; not only were the trails wide enough for hikers going in both directions, but the trail was relatively level and offered several different views.

Raven Cliff Falls

A popular trail in the Chattahoochee National Forest, known for its suspension bridge and the beautiful Raven Cliff Falls. The trail is approximately 5 miles round trip and is moderately difficult due to the narrow trails consisting of tree branches and crossing streams. We discovered from some locals that the weather had been very dry the past few months (basically little to no rain), which is why these falls were not prominent.

Hikes + Views

Brasstown Bald

Brasstown Bald stands proudly as the highest point in the state of Georgia, offering a breathtaking panoramic experience for visitors. Nestled in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, this majestic peak reaches an elevation of 4,784 feet (1,458 meters). Accessible by a scenic drive followed by a short hike or a shuttle ride, the summit unveils an observation deck that provides unparalleled views of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains, including the rolling hills of Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Our visit not only came with outstanding views, but some fog rolling down from the mountains; we weren’t able to see as many views as we would have liked because of it. This hike is by far the longest drive, as it’s close to Hiawassee, GA and the Tennessee border.

Laurel Ridge Trail

This was much more than like a moderate/intermediate trail and about 1.5 miles roundtrip, but the view from the top is totally worth it!

Unicoi Lake Loop

About 2.1 miles, this is a fairly easy trail.

Here are some of recommendations for what to wear on these day hikes; most importantly, wear something you’re comfortable with, and possibly getting dirty!
