Travel Guide: Hilton Head Island

Written by

Hilton Head Island is my go-to vacation. This small South Carolina town is nestled on its own island and boasts the charm of both the Lowcountry and a beach town. No matter how many times I’ve been there over the years, each visit is slightly different and still my favorite vacation destination.

Explore Hilton Head

Beaches

If you aren’t staying on or close to the beach, there’s a few spots you can be able to drive and park (although parking can be limited depending on the weather). Although weather can vary in the offseason, sometimes it can be the best way to relax on the beach. Whether you’re relaxing on the beach and tickling your toes in the sand, or strolling in the surf, hunting for seashells, these beaches are sure to help you to unwind. Decide between Burke’s Beach, Coligny Beach Park, Driessen Beach Park, or Folly Field Beach, but keep in mind that parking could be limited based on the season and time of day.

Bike around the Island

With plenty of bike paths around the island, this is a great way to spend the day. These pathways provide over 60 miles of opportunities to navigate either the beaches or history of the Island. Check out Chaplin Park, Coligny Plaza, the Fish Haul Tabby Ruins in the Historic Mitchellville area, or the Union Cemetary. Click here for more information on the pathways. The bikeways can also take you to Shelter Cove for more shopping and dining options.

Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn

With donations as a payment for entry, this adorable small part of the island is nestled away and offers some great views to be able to discover. This facility is a great way to learn about the culture of the Lowcountry by exploring it’s boardwalks, gardens, and historic buildings.

Pinckney Island National Refuge Preserve

This nature preserve is a great way to spend an afternoon exploring the low country nature.

Rent Kayaks or Stand-Up Paddle boards.

Feeling outdoorsy? Book a kayak (or SUP) tour through Saltmarsh Paddle Tours! Departing from their meeting point at the Old Oyster Factory, this wonderful tour guides you through the the Lowcountry rivers. They also offer rentals as well, check their website for pricing; advanced reservations required.

Explore Sea Pines

Plenty of places to bike around Sea Pines, with the miles of bike trails it’s a great way to spend a few hours. Some of the stopping points can be to visit Baynard Ruins, grabbing coffee at Harbour Town Bakery & Cafe (originally the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage, circa 1880) stopping in either South Beach (home to the Salty Dog Cafe) or Harbor Town for lunch.

Whether you’re checking out The Shops at Sea Pines Center or visiting Harbor Town, both plazas offer unique shops and restaurants to enjoy. Harbor Town is known for the RBC Heritage (golf) Tournament. ** Hours can vary depending on the Season.

Visit Lawton Stables

With a variety of options from taking the kids to the Animal Farm (or on a Pony ride for the young ones) booking a Trail Ride, this wonderful place is definitely a hidden gem the family can enjoy within Sea Pines. Trail Rides can be booked by visiting here. Note: Restrictions apply

Visit Bluffton, SC

This quaint little town is nestled just minutes away, and home to the Tanger Outlets located on the outskirts of town (you drove through it right before taking the bridge onto the Island). Downtown Bluffton boasts a ton of charm, and a great way to grab coffee at the Corner Perk as you spend the day exploring the adorable shops, while deciding between one of the quaint restaurants. Burnt Church Distillery is a great way to spend an evening here as well, between a tour or enjoying its live entertainment.

Visit Daufuskie Island

This southern barrier island is available by boat from Hilton Head, and can also be a wonderful day trip. Home to the Gullah Geechie communities, you can also be able to check out Tour Dafuskie for an option to explore pathways or waterways, visit Daufuskie Island Distillery, or any local Artisans the Island has to offer..
