Weekend Guide: Columbus

Written by

Sitting right on the Chattahoochee River and neighboring Phenix City, Alabama, this western city in Georgia has plenty of history as well as things to do. Downtown has gentrified over the past several decades, while still has potential in development. Being the second largest city in the state, Columbus has deep military ties, from it’s days during the Civil War to present day home to Fort Moore (formerly Fort Benning). Did you know that Columbus is home to Ma Rainey and Carson McCullers?

What to Do

Chattahoochee Riverwalk

Whether you’re biking, running, or walking down this paved pathway, there’s plenty of wonderful views along the way. Just don’t loose track of the time, you may find yourself in Fort Moore!

Columbus Museum

Located in the heart of the Wynnton neighborhood of Columbus, stop by for to explore the collection of the Chattahoochee River Valley since it was founded back in 1953.

Gertrude “Ma” Rainey House & Blues Museum

Born in Columbus, Ma Rainey developed her own flair of the Jazz and Blues industry and performed at the Springer Opera House in the early part of her career; once retiring she settled back in Columbus. Museum hours and tours vary.

National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus

Overlooking the Chattahoochee River, this museum leads you through a month-by-month timeline of the Civil War with it’s artifacts, as well as housing warships and/or wreckage from CSS Jackson and the CSS Chattahoochee.

Rush South Whitewater Park

Enjoy a variety of adventures right on the Chattahoochee River, including whitewater rafting and kayaking.  This location also offers the opportunity to zip-line across the River and between two states.

Springer Opera House

This State Theatre of Georgia has a long and rich history, opening in 1871 to help revitalize Columbus after the Civil War.  In our modern age, plan a visit to see a show or even contact the Theatre directly to see about scheduling a Tour.  Located in Downtown Columbus.

Where to Eat

Breakfast:

  • Fountain City Coffee ($): This local roaster is all that and more.  What’s not to love about starting your day off with one of FCC Lattes (my favorite is the Irish Spring), while deciding on what to put on your breakfast sandwich?

Lunch:

  • Banks Food Hall ($$): Located in the heart of downtown and next to the Chattahoochee, the Dining Hall boasts an eclectic menu.  If you’re looking to grab either food, coffee, or just a pint, this is your spot.
  • Country’s Barbeque ($$):  This hometown favorite boasts 2 location (Mid-Town and near Columbus Park Crossing), with one hosting a giant rocking chair.
  • Dinglewood Pharmacy ($): Take a step back in time and grab lunch at probably one of this pharmacy’s Soda Fountain.  It’s known for its Scramble-Dog
  • Mama Goldberg’s ($):
  • Minnie’s Uptown Restaurant ($): This meat+2/3 is a great southern staple in Columbus and has been for 30+ years.  Located in Downtown Columbus.

Dinner + Drinks:

  • 1885 Rooftop Bar & Kitchen ($$): Focused on small plates and craft cocktails, this rooftop location matches its culinary journey to its photogenic location.  Located a short walk north of the Columbus Riverwalk near Hotel Indigo.
  • Caffe Amici ($$): This local old style Italian restaurant is sure to send your senses into overload.  Between the smells and tastes, this mid-town location is located close to The Landings shopping plaza.
